TikTok for my business?

  • Teaser Macht Sinn EN: No, that's what I decided today. But "yes" for those of my clients who want to be in direct contact with the young target group.

When and how does this become a strategic activity and how should it be evaluated? In preparation for my new Master's course, I came across an interesting textbook on this topic: "Strategisches Framing" by Michael Oswald, published in 2019. It offers a good orientation in this subject area.

I will also discuss this topic with my students because it offers positive opportunities for the profession of "Communication". After all, you can also "frame" topics in the right light. Framed well, one can mediate between people and organizations, generating long-term support.

In order to frame well, meaning responsibly, you have to know something about this mechanism and reflect on it every day. And you have to pay close attention to the (written and spoken) word.

Which frames are used and how do they work? The Süddeutsche Zeitung writes about this in a "framing check".

Therefore I take up here again the Unwort yearly "climatic hysteria". Here the concern about our planet was linked with a word that describes elsewhere a neurotic disorder. The word has its origin in the old Greek (hystéra), and means there Uterus.
I can't tell you how stupid I think this word is. And I hope they don't call me hysterical now.

Lets do some work now!

  • Titel des Beitrags EN: Lets do some work now!
  • Kachelbild hochladen 16:9 EN: Lets do some work now!
  • Teaser Macht Sinn EN: I would like to see something from the future coalition leaders: Fast and respectful negotiations and forward-looking ideas and decisions.
I wish that the accompanying rhetoric of all those involved would do justice to the size of the task, and not flaunt the size of their own egos.

There is enough to do - social justice, pensions, jobs, climate, education and training, digitalization, bureaucratization. I hope for a package that addresses the root causes of the problems.

If that happened, we would all have to be prepared for change. In a commentary in the FAZ, Gerald Braunberger writes: "Any new government will have to deal with the contradiction between an urgent need for reform and the resistance of many people to change in their lives."

This will not be easy, as I know only too well as a consultant in change processes. But, as the FAZ headlines, there is a "duty to change". Here you can read the article (in German only).

What makes us courageous

  • Titel des Beitrags EN: What makes us courageous
  • Kachelbild hochladen 16:9 EN: What makes us courageous
  • Teaser Macht Sinn EN: In order for the "return to normality" in the coming months not to become a "business as usual", (big) changes are needed.
Everyone knows that. How do we get into the movement? This (also) requires courage. What makes us courageous?

The magazine Zeitschrift für Organisationsentwicklung calls its overview the "courage rocket". It presents two aspects: What I bring to the table as a person:

- a proactive personality
- Confidence in one's own abilities
- Orientation towards one's own values
- Positive mother experiences

When the personal courageous person acts pro-socially, this brings the organisation forward. This requires on the part of the organisation

- a noble, value-compatible goal
- Support and value orientation of the organisation and leadership role models

are present.

Baaaam, there we have the salad. I currently still see many organisations as wait-and-see despondent. I see leaders who are unwilling or not sufficiently supported. This is often understandable from a human point of view, because every brave person has come out of their comfort zone before. But in the long run, it's not effective!

If you want to read more about how people and organisations can be more courageous, I recommend the article "Out of the comfort zone" by Winfried Berner (ZOE 3/21, in German only).

Home Office: Yes or No?

  • Titel des Beitrags EN: Home Office: Yes or No?
  • Kachelbild hochladen 16:9 EN: Home Office: Yes or No?
  • Teaser Macht Sinn EN: Houston, we have a problem: managers want to bring their employees back to the office, they want to work at home more and more.
A study by McKinsey offers figures: After the pandemic, 52 per cent of C-level managers would like to see their employees in the office for four days or more, 36 per cent vote for 3 days, 12 per cent for two days. Exactly the opposite is true for employees: Only 37 per cent want to go back to the office full time, 52 per cent hybrid work, 11 per cent would like to work only from home.

Of course, the home office world is not all rosy, as the study also recapitulates. Working at home under the stress of a pandemic also leads to fatigue, difficulty separating from work, a deterioration of social networks and a weakening sense of belonging, it says.

If the organisation decides to have more home offices, it must be clear that it will involve a change in culture and this will not happen overnight. Leaders need to listen and develop a deep understanding of employees. Everyone needs to try it out and learn from the results. If not, according to the authors of the study, it creates o growing alienation between employees and managers and therefore accelerate the risk of high turnover.

Home office or no home office? I'm doing neither one nor the other for the next three weeks. My holiday starts today, I will be back for you on 26.08.2021.

Skills for tomorrow

  • Teaser Macht Sinn EN: Thanks to digital technologies, our working world is changing fundamentally, radically and rapidly. What skills do we need for this?
I wish that the accompanying rhetoric of all those involved would do justice to the size of the task, and not flaunt the size of their own egos.
